National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim disclosed that the Assembly Office was supposed to discuss the request of MP Obaid Al-Wasmi to reopen the ballot boxes and recount the votes during the 2022 election during its meeting on Thursday. He explained that the secretary general of the Assembly received a call from the Constitutional Court informing him about its intention to hand over the minutes and documents related to the 2022 election to the Assembly on Sunday.
He added the Assembly Office decided to adjourn the meeting until it receives the minutes and documents from the court. He also emphasized that he supports the Amiri speech delivered by His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah on the occasion of the last 10 days of Ramadan, particularly the intention to let the nation decide through a fair parliamentary election. He holds HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah accountable for the issuance of a decree on dissolving the legislature. He urged the premier to take legal steps in this regard in order to avoid repeating previous errors.
On Sunday, Al-Ghanim will invite the lawmakers and government to the ordinary session scheduled for Tuesday as per Articles 71 and 72 of the National Assembly Law. On the other hand, constitutional expert Professor Ibrahim Al-Homoud said the request of Al-Wasmi is unconstitutional and a violation of the law on establishing the Constitutional Court. He pointed out that the Constitutional Court has the sole authority to check the results of parliamentary elections. Moreover, MP and former Minister of Information and Culture Hamad Rouhaddeen confirmed that he supports the request of Al-Wasmi. He believes it will reveal the truth regarding the alleged manipulation of the election results. “In case the allegation turns out to be false, all those who made the allegation must be questioned and punished. If the allegation is proven true, the concerned parties or individuals will be questioned.
In all cases, this is good for the citizens, because they will know the truth,” he added. He said he prepared a proposal to form a parliamentary fact-finding committee to investigate the alleged manipulation of election results that he was supposed to submit during one of the adjourned sessions.
