Venue shifting of dispensing driving licenses leads to huge rush at malls.

Chaos as timing to receive visitors insufficient

After the General Traffic Department stopped handing out driving licenses at Al-Nasr Sports Club, where it delivered more than 54,000 licenses for over two months, the scenario of license delivery in commercial centers with long queues has become unworthy of the country’s reputation and the supposed technological development in providing its services, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The General Traffic Department had decided to receive license applicants in five commercial centers without announcing a specific time frame or specifying the categories in the designated centers. These five commercial complexes are the Avenues Mall, Al-Kout Mall, Marina Mall, Souq Sharq, and Al-Khaimah Mall in Jahra.

Following the announcement, hundreds of visitors have been accumulating daily in front of the machines dispensing the licenses but many of them are unable to get the license that they want. The daily monitored the congestion at the Marina Mall. Despite the efforts of the responsible officer there to hand out the ready licenses, the increasing numbers rendered those efforts pointless. The congestion contributed to extension of the waiting queue outside and below the complex into the car parking areas under the hot and humid weather conditions, which made the employees of the General Traffic Department as well as the visitors exhausted.

Meanwhile, the visitors revealed that those responsible for the devices in some locations refuse to receive expatriates even though the devices are vacant. They instead were transferred to other sites, which led to the accumulation of visitors from the Farwaniya, Hawalli and Capital governorates inside one complex.

They indicated that prohibiting the reception of visitors from 1:30 pm and starting work at 8:00 am is not sufficient for the visitors, as the work of the automated devices must be in line with the working hours of the complex to allow reception at any time due to its presence in a public place.
