British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday named Indian-origin politician Rishi Sunak to be his new finance minister, after Sajid Javid sensationally resigned.
Sunak, 39, has a business background and previously served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, effectively Sajid Javid’s number two.
Rish Sunak attended the prestigious Winchester College before going on to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University. He also has an MBA from Stanford University in the United States.
Rish Sunak’s wife is the daughter of Indian billionaire and co-founder of IT services company Infosys, Narayana Murthy.
His father was a doctor and his mother ran a chemist shop. Before entering politics he worked for investment bank Goldman Sachs and a hedge fund, then co-founded an investment firm.
Sajid Javid quit as the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer as Boris Johnson’s first major Cabinet reshuffle went disastrously wrong.
Pakistani-descent Javid, who became the first Asian to become a Cabinet Minister when he was made Secretary of State of culture, Media and Sports in the David Cameron government in 2014 after stints as Economic Secretary to the Treasury (2012-13) and Financial Secretary (2013-14), was earlier the Home Secretary in the the Theresa May government.
The finance minister resigned after a face-to-face row with Johnson inside 10 Downing Street. The prime minister demanded that Javid fire all five of his most senior aides but the chancellor refused and quit, according to three people familiar with the matter.
