9 arrested in primary poll; Iraq MP’s statement condemned.

Nine citizens, including some members of the nullified 2022 Parliament, were arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution recently for organizing primary elections in the Fourth Constituency. Sources from the Ministry of Interior disclosed that special teams have been tasked to monitor the local arena to uncover election-related violations like the organization and participation in primary elections, which are criminalized acts as per the National Assembly Election Law number 35/1962. Sources affirmed these teams have been instructed to strictly enforce the law and refer all those proven to have committed violations to the prosecution. Sources said this campaign will continue until Election Day — June 6, 2023.

Meanwhile, former MP and First Constituency candidate Osama Al-Shaheen condemned the provocative statements of Iraqi lawmaker Soud Al-Saaedi about the Kuwaiti marine and land borders. He asserted such statements are outrightly rejected, because they are illegal and unjustified. Al-Saaedi filed a petition at the Higher Federal Court in Iraq against the treaty between Kuwait and Iraq regarding Abdullah Bay. He wondered why the Kuwaiti government remains silent over the issue, stressing the need to take an official stand against such attitude. He added Kuwait seems to be gearing toward granting loans and donations to Iraq, warning this could lead to negative repercussions. He then urged the Iraqi authorities to clarify their stand on the issue.
