KISR obtains patent to measure dust accumulation effect.

Invention characterized by single solar cell use

The Renewable Energy Program of the Energy and Building Research Center at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research has obtained a patent issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on the subject of measuring the effect of dust accumulation or any other pollutants on the performance of solar cells, reports Al-Rai daily, quoting KUNA.

Dr Al-Zoubi, Eng Al-Kandari and Eng Al-Asfour

The institute said in a press release the patent was registered in the names of the research team, Dr Firas Al-Zoubi, Eng Abdullah Al-Kandari and Eng Abdel Wahab Al-Asfour, who have succeeded in this invention, which is a practical design and a new mathematical model dedicated to studying and measuring the effect of spatially uniform and irregular dust distribution on the surfaces of solar cells accurately.

The press release added this invention is characterized by its use of a single solar cell that is measured under three different conditions in three stages within a very short period of time, as the solar cell is completely and directly exposed to sunlight in the first stage, then in the second stage it is exposed to light through clean transparent glass, while in the third stage it is exposed to light through transparent glass that was exposed to dust or any natural pollutant, as it allows the solar cell to move in two directions to measure the energy produced under different points of the polluted glass, which is the first of its kind characteristic of this invention.

The press released mentioned that this invention, which was revealed as a platform for testing photovoltaic, works of all kinds and under different pollution conditions, allowing the invention to have a wide range of potential applications and contributes to discovering the potential defects of the photovoltaic module resulting from the accumulation of irregular dust or even resulting from the mismatch between solar cells, i.e. the formation of a hot spot. The institute said that the invention also helps in enhancing PV power plant decisions regarding pre-construction design layouts and maintenance work to locate irregular dirt with a high degree of accuracy and to provide better predictions of plant performance variability due to seasonal dirt distribution.

The institute pointed out that the invention also contributes to accurately identifying (antagonists) cleaning for photovoltaic cells, which reduces costs and monitors energy production losses due to pollution. Moreover, the invention can also help in studying the effect of photovoltaic glass surface treatment techniques on dirt accumulation patterns (i.e. anti-reflection and pollution coatings).
