Kuwait Bay becoming a hotbed of pollution: EPA

‘Teams visit site, take samples for analysis’

With the recent announcement by the Environment Public Authority saying it received notification about a sewage fl ow to one of the sewers located along Hawalli Governorate’s coastal area, the authority stated that competent teams had visited the site and taken samples for analysis, and that the network would be tracked to determine the body responsible for the violation to take necessary measures against them, reports Al-Qabas daily. The daily quoting environmental activists revealed that pollutants are exacerbated in Kuwait Bay due to environmental abuses and violations that cause the death of marine organisms.

Dangerous
They explained, “After the phenomenon of over-fishing and encroachment of fishermen suffered by Kuwait Bay, the reality now is more dangerous than ever, especially with the sea in the northern areas near Doha, Subiyah and Sulaibikhat becoming a drainage point.”

They revealed that more than 55 rainfall estuaries distributed in Kuwait Bay have become the real enemy to marine organisms that are poisoned by organic matter and untreated wastewater, causing a reduction in the percentage of oxygen and increasing algae and toxic elements.

Despite the existence of several committees set up by the Environment Public Authority, in addition to intensified measures adopted over the years amid the recommendations of the Council of Ministers, pollutants continue to accumulate, they noted. The same activists pointed out that “in the past few days, they have spotted the death of fish that dwells in deep waters and the coast in Doha and Shuwaikh. In addition, crabs known to be hiding under rocks are escaping to the beach in a deplorable state, and trying to breathe with difficulty.
