Welfare Kerala Kuwait Farwaniya Zone conducts Karippur Protection Campaign

Under the auspices of Welfare Kerala Kuwait Farwania zone “Karippur Int’l Airport protection meet” was conducted at ideal auditorium, Farwaniya.  The Meeting was conducted in solidarity with the parent organization’s Protest march conducted in Kerala demanding the Kerala Government to Protect Karippur Int’l Airport from dying.  The ongoing campaign was triggered as the authority has failed to reinstate the Haj embarkation point at Calicut and the failure to restart the flights after many major airlines pulled out of Karipur, despite the fact that the works of the runway including re-carpeting and electrification completed in February 2017.

The airport used to be a convenient destination point and was a major relief to thousands of expatriates, and Haj Pilgrims. But the Airport Authority of India had shut the runway partially and announced a blanket ban on wide-bodied aircraft from May 1, 2015 after a study by the Central Road Research Institute found that the airport runway was not in good condition. Subsequently, nearly 20,000 seats were cut to Gulf countries from Karipur which hit thousands of expats from northern districts. Besides, the Airport also lost its status as the Haj embarkation point in the state of Kerala. The Expats from Kerala are upset as they see the Government is supporting the Private airport lobby working in Kochi and Kannur for their selfish motives.

The program was presided over by Zonal President Abdul Wahid.  Ashraf U. Vinod Pereira, Layik Ahmed, Sibi Mathews and Shaukath Valanchery expressed their protest and Central committee president Khaleelurahman delivered the concluding speech.  Earlier Afthab Alam welcomed the gathering.  The program concluded with the Chanting of slogans:  “we will not allow to kill our Karippur Airport for the selfish motives of a few unscrupulous millionaire lobby of the privately owned airport in Kochi and Kannur” by the members in support of the protest march conducted in Kerala.
